St. Clair Energy Centre

The St. Clair Energy Centre is a 584-megawatt combined-cycle natural gas turbine generation facility in St. Clair Township, Ontario (Huron Tract, Treaty 29 territory). The facility has been in operations since 2009, powering Ontario homes and businesses.

In 2023, as part of the Independent Electricity System Operator’s Same Technology Upgrades Solicitation, the St. Clair Energy Centre installed modernization upgrades to add approximately 70-megawatt of additional electricity generation capacity, for a total of 654-megawatts, to meet Ontario's growing energy needs.

Proposed St. Clair Expansion

St. Clair Energy Centre is proposing an expansion to the existing Facility, referred to as the St. Clair Expansion Project (“Project”). The Project, if awarded a contract through the Independent Electricity System Operator’s Long-Term 2 Capacity Services Request for Proposals (RFP), would include the addition of a new GE 7F class turbine with a capacity of approximately 241 MW. This would increase the Facility’s total generation to 895 MW, with commercial operation targeted for May 2030.

The new turbine will operate independently as a peaking unit and will run only when dispatched by the IESO. It will be located adjacent to the existing Facility and will make use of existing supporting infrastructure. The Project will undertake a provincial environmental assessment as outlined by the Province Ontario’s Guide to Environmental Assessment Requirements for Electricity Projects.
